Novelist and critic George Orwell reveals his five stages of Rudyard Kipling in a review published on this date in 1935.

“I worshipped Kipling at 13, loathed him at 17, enjoyed him at 20, despised him at 25, and now again rather admire him.”

In 1950, 14 years to the day, Orwell will die at age 46 of a tubercular hemorrhage.
